ESTIMATING OF COST DUE TO THE USE OF STUDDED TIRES AND SNOW CHAINS
THE TOTAL COST OF STUDDED TIRE USE IS ATTRIBUTED TO THE COST OF EXTRA WEAR, THE COST OF TRAFFIC DISTURBANCE AND INTERUPTION, AND THE COST OF THE STUDS. EACH OF THESE FACTORS ARE DISCUSSED IN DETAIL. A METHOD FOR ESTIMATION OF THE COST OF WEAR HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. THE METHOD IS BASED ON THE DIFFERENCE IN SERVICE LIFE BETWEEN PAVEMENTS SUBJECTED TO STUDDED TIRES AND PAVEMENTS WITH UNSTUDDED TRAFFIC. IN A DISCUSSION OF FACTORS INFLUENCING PAVEMENT WEAR, CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO STUD PARAMETERS, SNOW AND ICE CONDITIONS, TEMPERATURE AND ROAD GEOMETRY, TRAFFIC VOLUME AND USE OF STUDS, AND PAVEMENT WEARING RESISTANCE. COST FACTORS ATTRIBUTED TO PAVEMENT WEAR AND OTHER FACTORS ARE OUTLINED. AND COST ESTIMATES ARE PRESENTED FOR THE PUBLIC ROAD NETWORK, IN NORWAY.
