THOUGHTS ON TOLERABLE PAVEMENT WEAR

THE USE OF STUDDED SNOW TIRES HAS ACCELERATED THE FORMATION OF LONGITUDINAL WHEEL PATH RUTS IN WHICH WATER MAY POND. WHEN DEPTH OF WEAR FALLS IN THE RANGE OF 7 TO 13 MM THE DEPTH OF PONDED WATER CAN HAVE THE ADVERSE CONSEQUENCES OF VEHICLE SPLASH AND REDUCED TIRE-TO-ROAD CONTACT, LEADING TO HYDROPLANING. THE EFFECTS OF WEAR ON SKID-RESISTANCE AND TRAFFIC RESISTANCE ARE REVIEWED. REMEDIAL MEASURES ARE DISCUSSED. STUDDED TIRE WEAR IS REVIEWED IN LIGHT OF ALL FACTORS INCLUDING THE INTERESTS OF THE TAXPAYER CONCERNED WITH REPAIR COSTS, AND THE DRIVER WHO IS SEEKING IMPROVED TRACTION AND MANEUVERABILITY DURING WINTER. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE EFFECT OF RUTTING ON VEHICLE OPERATION, THE EFFECTS OF SKID RESISTANCE, THE REDUCTION IN PAVEMENT STRUCTURAL CAPACITY, AND THE WEAR ON STRUCTURAL MARKINGS. THE REPORT CONCLUDES WITH AN OVERALL STATEMENT OF WHAT KIND OF WEAR IS TOLERABLE. THE USE OF STUDDED SNOW TIRES HAS ACCELERATED THE FORMATION OF LONGITUDINAL WHEEL PATH RUTS IN WHICH WATER MAY POND.
