DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPARATIVE MARKOV MODEL FOR SHIP OVERHAUL POLICIES

The object of the thesis is development of a method for describing the behavior of a ship's material condition over time so that the way in which various maintenance strategies affect this material condition may be examined. The thesis demonstrates the manner in which these strategies may then be evaluated based on total expected cost of a fleet of ships. Ship failure and deterioration behavior is modeled as a transient Markov process, with a set of increasingly complex models. The most comprehensive of these allows such behavior to depend on the ship's present condition, its age, and the time since it was last overhauled. In the models a ship is treated as a single component, rather than an aggregation of several smaller components, and it is assumed that the ship's material condition can be categorized in a discrete manner. Use of the models is demonstrated by the use of two example cases, one of which is based on actual maintenance data for Navy ships.
