HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE BY CONTRACT
THIS REPORT EXAMINES HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE BY CONTRACT. FIGURES ARE REPORTED WHICH INDICATE AN INCREASE IN CONTRACT MAINTENANCE FROM 7.2 PERCENT IN 1959 TO 9.5 PERCENT IN 1970. THE AASHO SURVEY INDICATES 16.7 PERCENT IN FISCAL YEAR 1972 FOR CONTRACT MAINTENANCE WORK. ALL BUT TWO STATES DO SOME AMOUNT OF MAINTENANCE CONTRACT WORK. AN OVERVIEW IS GIVEN OF THE TYPE OF MAINTENANCE PROJECTS AND CONDITIONS FOR MAINTENANCE CONTRACTS, AND EXAMPLES ARE PRESENTED OF PROJECTS CONFORMABLE TO CONTRACTS. THE RESPONSES TO A SURVEY OF STATES AND COUNTIES, WHICH WERE ASKED TO REPORT ANY PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED, ARE PRESENTED.
