ASPHALT HIGHWAY "DE-SLICKED" WITH COLD MIX SURFACING
THE NEW SURFACE WHICH HAS A HIGH COEFFICIENT OF FRICTION AND HELPS LEVEL THE OLD ROAD, CONSISTS OF AN OPEN-GRADED, RATHER POROUS COLD MIX ASPHALT MIXTURE MADE FROM A QUICK SETTLING ASPHALT EMULSION, OSKH AND A LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATE. THE MIX WAS LAID TO A LOOSE DEPTH OF 1.5 IN. AND COMPACTED BY ROLLING TO A DEPTH OF 1 IN. A MIDLAND MIX-PAVER (MODIFIED TO HANDLE THE QUICK-SETTING CHARACTERISTICS) MIXED AND LAID DOWN THE MATERIAL. THE AGGREGATE WHICH WAS DELIVERED TO THE JOB SITE BY TRUCKS WAS DUMPED INTO THE FEED HOOPER, WHERE IT WAS FED TO THE PUGMILL INTO WHICH THE ASPHALT WAS ALSO INTRODUCED AT A METERED RATE. THE PUGMILL DISCHARGED THE MIXTURE IN FRONT OF THE STRIKE-OFF SCREED WHERE IT WAS DISTRIBUTED TO A 10 FT WIDTH. THE ASPHALT WAS MIXED AT A RATE OF 18 TO 22 PERCENT BY WEIGHT. THE MIXER PAVER CARRIED 2250 GAL. OF ASPHALT, 4/CU/YD OF AGGREGATE AND THE PUGMILL HAD A CAPACITY OF 400 TPH. THE MACHINE TRAMS AT 8 MPH ON RUBBER, AND HAS A VIBRATING SCREED WITH GRADE AND SLOPE CONTROL THAT CAN BE ADJUSTED TO THE CORRECT DEPTH OF MATERIAL TO BE PLACED. IT IS HOPED THAT THE NEW SURFACE WILL ALLOW DRAINAGE OF SURFACE WATER AND SO ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR HYDROPLANNING. OBSERVATIONS SHOW THAT THE SURFACE IS MORE SKID RESISTANT OVER A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME THAN ANY OTHER SURFACE.
