EXPERIMENT WITH A SALT SUBSTITUTE
FOR ECOLOGICAL REASONS, FLY ASH PRODUCED AT A A COAL-BURNING POWER PLANT, WAS USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO SALT. THE FLY ASH CONSISTS OF TINY, BLACK SHARP- EDGED ANGULAR CHIPS, THE BLACK, CHEMICALLY INERT MATERIAL IS COARSER THAN SAND AND ABSORBS HEAT FROM THE SUN. THE GRIT IMPROVED TRACTION AND REDUCED ACCIDENTS. THE FLY ASH DOES NOT RUN OFF WHEN THE SNOW MELTS AND MUST BE SWEPT UP PROMPTLY SINCE THE GRIT DAMAGES TIRES SOMEWHAT. THE MATERIAL LEAVES THE STREETS WITH A DIRTY APPEARENCE IN WINTER.
