GEORGIA PERMITS BETTER LESS COSTLY PIPELINE CROSSING OF HIGHWAYS

IN 1971 THE COLONIAL PIPELINE COMPANY REQUESTED AND RECEIVED PERMISSION FROM THE GEORGIA STATE HIGHWAY DEPARTMENT TO EMPLOY A NEW TYPE OF HIGHWAY CROSSING ON A PIPELINE CONSTRUCTED IN GEORGIA. PRIOR TO THAT TIME, THE STATE REQUIRED THAT A PIPELINE CROSSING UNDER A HIGHWAY BE INSERTED IN A SEPARATE ENCASEMENT PIPE. NOW NO ENCASEMENT PIPE IS REQUIRED. THE 1 1/2 IN. ANNULAR SPACE BETWEEN BORED HOLE AND CONCRETE-ENCASED STEEL PIPE IS FILLED WITH RIGID URETHANE FOAM. THE NEW DESIGN IS SUPERIOR, SAFER AND LESS COSTLY. THE UNCASED CROSSINGS OFFER THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES: (1) THE INCREASED THICKNESS OF THE PIPE OVER NORMAL PIPE RESULTS IN LOWER STRESS, AND HIGHER STRENGTH; (2) THERE IS NO PROBLEM OF SHORTING OUT THE CATHODIC PROTECTION SYSTEM; AND (3) THE CONCRETE JACKET PROTECTS THE PIPE COATING DURING INSTALLATION.
