PUTTING NEW LIFE IN OLD PAVEMENT

REJUVENATING EMULSION TREATMENTS ARE BEING INCREASINGLY EMPLOYED TO EXTEND THE LIFE OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS (INCLUDING OLDER PAVEMENTS). IMPROVE ASPHALT PROPERTIES IN HEAT SCARIFIER AND HEATER REPAVING OPERATIONS, AND HELP FILL AND SEAL PAVEMENT CRACKS. EXPERIENCE GAINED IN THE USE OF THE REJUVENATING AGENT WHICH IS A WATER EMULSION OF SELECTED PETROCHEMICALS IS CONSIDERED A HELPFUL GUIDE TO ENGINEERS. THE GREASE- RING TEST FOR DETERMINING THE SUITABILITY FOR REJUVENATING TREATMENT IS DESCRIBED. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE PAVEMENT WILL DICTATE NOT ONLY WHAT RATE OF MATERIAL SHOULD BE APPLIED BUT ALSO WHETHER A TREATMENT SHOULD BE MADE AT ALL. ASPHALT PAVEMENTS SHOULD HAVE AN AIR VOID CONTENT OF AT LEAST 5 PERCENT TO MAKE APPLICATION PRACTICAL AND BENEFICIAL. THE OLDER PAVEMENTS SHOULD EXHIBIT NO FREE ASPHALT ON ITS SURFACE AND THEIR ABSORBENCY MUST BE ADEQUATE. THE REJUVENATING AGENT SHOULD BE SPRAYED BY A CLEAN ASPHALT DISTRIBUTER WITH SMALL (APPROXIMATELY 0.125 INCH ORIFICE) SPRAY NOZZLE TIPS. THE EFFECT OF THE EMULSION (WHICH MAY BE SPREAD AT ANY TEMPERATURE ABOVE 30 DEGREES, TO A DRY PAVEMENT) ON ROAD TRACTION IS DISCUSSED. MEANS OF OVERCOMING SLIPPERY CONDITIONS WHICH MAY DEVELOP ARE OUTLINED.
