ONTARIO EXAMINES ALTERNATIVE TO THE TRADITIONAL SNOW FENCE

AMONG ALTERNATIVES BEING PRESENTLY EVALUATED IS THE PAPER FENCE WHICH CONSISTS BASICALLY OF PLASTICIZED KRAFT PAPER. TWO 13-IN WIDE STRIPS ARE FASTENED TO THE ANGLE- RON REQULARLY USED FOR SNOW FENCING AND IS SANDWICHED BETWEEN WOODEN SLATS TO PREVENT TEARING. IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE EFFECT OF BLOWING SNOW, THE SPACING OF THE STRIPS IS BEING VARIED AND AVERAGES ABOUT 18 INCHES. ALTHOUGH THE STRIPS WILL HAVE TO BE RENEWED EACH YEAR, THE COST IS SO LOW THAT TOTAL EXPENDITURE WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY LESS THAN IN THE USE OF REGULAR FENCING. EVALUATORY STUDIES ARE ALMOST COMPLETE ON AN ALL-PLASTIC FENCE WHICH CONSISTS OF AN OPEN WAVE OF POLYETHYLENE OR POLYPROYLENE TAPES COATED ON BOTH SIDES WITH A FILM OF POLYETHYLENE. THE EDGES OF THE STRIP ARE TURNED OVER AND SEALED TO THE SURFACE. POLYPROPYLENE TAPES RUN THROUGH THE RESULTING SEMAS. THREE 9-INCH WIDE STRIPS ARE SPACED 12 INCHES APART AND STAPLED BETWEEN WOODEN SLATS EVERY 2 FEET. ADVANTAGES OFFERED BY THIS TYPE OF FENCE INCLUDE ITS LIGHT WEIGHT, EASY INSTALLATION AND LOWER COST. THE SIZEABLE POTENTIAL MARKET FOR AN ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE TO THE TRADITIONAL WOODEN FENCE IS NOTED. NEW PRODUCTS HOWEVER, MUST BE RESEARCHED AND EVALUATED ALONG DOCUMENTED SCIENTIFIC LINES BEFORE THEY CAN BE OFFERED TO THE GENERAL MARKET.
