Getting Around Gets Easier

As part of federal and state environmental approvals of the “Big Dig” project in Boston, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) had to agree to several large-scale transit projects. This article describes how the Big Dig project, which has had a significant effect on highway transportation, is also having a positive impact on transit. The largest aspect of the transit project is a four-mile addition to the eastern end of the current Green Line trolley line. Because the transit authority already has the right-of-way for the Green Line project, property takings will be minimal. The two communities that will be serviced by the line extension, Medford and Somerville, have had conflicting reactions to the project. Most Somerville residents are welcoming the transit link, while Medford residents are concerned about the effect of transit-related development on their community. MassDOT is also committed to adding service along a commuter line to several lower income neighborhoods and designing a connector between two other lines. MassDOT is also working on plans to extend transit-oriented developments throughout the Boston region.
