PAVEMENT REHABILITATION - MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES

REHABILITATION IN THIS SNYTHESIS OF CURRENT PRACTICE IS TAKEN TO MEAN AN OVERLAY THAT RESTORES THE PAVEMENT'S RIDING QUALITY, RESTORES ITS SKID RESISTANCE, OR UPGRADES THE LOAD-CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE EXISTING STRUCTURE. ONLY THE FIRST IS DEALT WITH HERE. THE VARIOUS FORMS OF DISTRESS MAY REQUIRE DIFFERENT OVERLAY TREATMENTS. A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF CURRENT PRACTICES AND TECHNIQUES WITH RESPECT TO CRACKING, SPALLING, PERMANENT DEFORMATION, STRIPPING, RAVELLING, AND SCALING. OVERLAY DESIGN PROCEDURES ARE TREATED FROM THE STANDPOINT OF MONOLITHIC EVALUATION AND LAYER ANALYSIS OF AC AND PCC OVERLAYS ON AC, PCC, AND COMPOSITE PAVEMENTS. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS GIVEN TO THE PROBLEM OF REFLECTION CRACKING IN OVERLAYS. THE OBJECTIVES OF AN OVERLAY MAY TO A LARGE EXTENT DETERMINE THE KIND TO BE USED, AS ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS OFTEN PLAY A DECISIVE ROLE. AMONG THE COSTS TO BE CONSIDERED ARE PRESENT OVERLAY COST, PRESENT USER COSTS, FUTURE OVERLAY COSTS, FUTURE USER COSTS, AND ANNUAL ROUTINE MAINTENANCE COSTS.
