PAVED-STREET REPAIRS PLANNED FOR LASTING SMOOTHNESS
MINNEAPOLIS HAS HAD TO DEVELOP A PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE SYSTEM THAT CAN ACCOMMODATE THE FREEZING AND THAWING CYCLES OF ITS NORTHERLY CLIMTE. THE PROGRAM FOR RESIDENTIAL STREETS AND ALLEYS HAS MADE EXTENSIVE USE OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE FOR RESURFACING AND AS A TOP COURSE OVER PCC BASES FOR NEW CONSTRUCTION. THE CITY CONSIDERS AN IDEAL MAINTENANCE PROGRAM FOR AC PAVEMENTS TO BE ONE WHICH PERMITS ANNUAL INSPECTION OF ALL PAVEMENTS, PROMPT CRACK FILLINGS, REPAIR OF MINOR BREAKS, AND RESEALING OF SURFACES OVER 3--7 YEARS, DEPENDING ON CONDITION AND TRAFFIC WEAR. CURRENT PRACTICES IN SEAL COATING, PATCHING, AND RESURFACING ARE DESCRIBED.
