DEVELOPMENTS IN THE MAINTENANCE OF STRUCTURES
THIS ARTICLE REVIEWS A NUMBER OF SIGNIFICANT CHANGES IN STRUCTURAL MAINTENANCE PRACTICE AT THE PORT OF NEW YORK AUTHORITY. ELASTOMERIC BEARING PADS HAVE BEEN USED AS REPLACEMENTS IN BRIDGES WITH SHORT SPANS; THE CONSTRUCTION SEQUENCE IS GIVEN. JOINT REHABILITATION WORK IN BRIDGES IS DESCRIBED. POLYESTER RESIN CEMENT HAS BEEN USED IN REPAIR OF CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS. CHEMICAL GROUT, WHICH WHEN COMBINED WITH WATER FORMS A GEL, HAS BEEN USED TO SEAL LEAKS CAUSED BY GROUND OR TIDAL WATER IN UNDERPASSES, TUNNELS, RETAINING WALLS AND SUB-BASEMENTS. /AUTHOR/
