UNBOUND AND HYDRAULICALLY BOUND GRAVEL AND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASES
THE STRUCTURE OF A PAVEMENT DEPENDS ON THE DEFORMATION MODULUS OF THE FROST BLANKET OR THE FROST-RESISTANT SUBSOIL, FOR WHICH A MINIMUM VALUE OF 1200 KP/SQ CM IS GIVEN IN SPECIFICATIONS FOR THE STANDARDIZATION OF ROAD PAVEMENT IN GERMANY. WITH ROADBASES OF SAND, GRAVEL AND BROKEN AGGREGATE THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION UNDER TRAFFIC RISES FAR ABOVE THE MINIMUM VALUE. VALUES BETWEEN 2500 AND 4500 KP/SQ CM WERE MEASURED ON UNBOUND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASES AND FROST BLANKETS ON THE FEDERAL ROAD NO. 8 AT VILSHOFEN AND STRAUBING. A COMPARISON OF THE COSTS OF VARIOUS CONSTRUCTION METHODS SHOWS THAT IN BAVARIA THE USE OF UNBOUND AND HYDRAULICALLY BOUND GRAVEL AND COARSE AGGREGATE ROADBASES IS AN ECONOMICAL PROPOSITION. BECAUSE OF ITS FAVOURABLE PROPERTIES THIS MATERIAL CAN SOMETIMES BE USED WITHOUT A SURFACING ON AGRICULTURAL ROADS CARRYING LIGHT TRAFFIC. /TRRL/
