DETECTING SILICA IN LIMESTONES
DR. ERIK HOGBERG, SWEDISH GEOLOGIST WITH CEMENTOCH-BETONG LABORATORIET, MALMO, HAS DEVELOPED A UNIQUE STAINING METHOD FOR DETECTING SILICA IN LIMESTONE. A SOLUTION CONSISTING OF 2 GRAMS METHYLENE BLUE, 450 GRAMS CONCENTRATED HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND 1,000 GRAMS WATER IS SPRAYED ON THE QUARRY FACE, ALLOWED TO REACT FOR 2 MINUTES AND THEN RINSED OFF THE FACE. FOLLOWING THE REACTION, THE SILICA-RICH LIMESTONE AREAS TURN DEEP BLUE, WHEREAS PRIOR TO SPRAYING THESE SAME AREAS COULD NOT BE DIFFERENTIATED FROM THE PURE LIMESTONE.
