ASH - THE USABLE WASTE
THE GREATEST USAGE OF ASH IS AS A FILL MATERIAL FOR ROADS, CONSTRUCTION SITES, ETC. RECENT DEVELOPMENTS, HOWEVER, HAVE SIGNIFICANT COMMERCIAL POTENTIAL. A MATERIAL COMPOSED OF LIME, FLYASH AND SULFATE OR SULFITE SLUDGES WAS USED TO PAVE SOME ACCESS ROADS AND PARKING AREAS AT DULLES INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT (WASHINGTON, D. C.). THE DEVELOPMENT HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED OF A PORTLAND POZZOLAN CEMENT (THAT IS A BLEND OF PORTLAND CEMENT AND FLYASH) FOR GENERAL CONSTRUCTION PURPOSES. THE USE OF ASH AND BOILER SLAG AS AGGREGATE IN HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION IS PLANNED. A FLYASH PROCESSING PLANT DESIGNED TO CATER TO THE FACE-BRICK AND PAVING-TILE MARKET HAS BEEN ESTABLISHED IN CANADA. A SPECIFICATION FOR THE "LIME-FLYASH-AGGREGATE" BASE MATERIAL HAS BEEN FINALIZED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF THE TEST PROGRAM AT DULLES AIRPORT. A SAMPLING OF RESEARCH PROJECTS IN PROGRESS IS PRESENTED. THESE INCLUDE THE USE OF ASH IN THE AGRICULTURE FERTILIZER INDUSTRY AS A NEUTRALIZING AGENT AND AS AN ADDITIVE TO INCREASE THE MOISTURE HOLDING CAPACITY OF SOIL. THE ADDITION OF 25 PERCENT OF FLYASH TO CLAY, EXTENDS THE USE OF CLAY (OR SHALE) DEPOSITS. LIGNITE ASH IS BEING PRODUCED AS A SYNTHETIC AGGREGATE, AND LIGNITE FLYASH IS BEING INVESTIGATED AS A FILLER IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE. WORK ON THE USE OF ASH IN RECLAMATION PROJECTS IS ALSO IN PROGRESS. THE USE OF ASH IN THE CONTROL OF SPONTANEOUS COMBUSTION IN MINE-REFUSE PILES AND AS EXTINGUISHER IN FORREST FIREES IS BEING INVESTIGATED.
