INFLUENCE OF AGGREGATE SHAPE AND SIZE AND BINDER MODULUS ON FLEXIBLE CONCRETE

THIS ARTICLE DISCUSSES SOME TEST PROCEDURES WHEREBY THE EFFECTS OF AGGREGATE SHAPE AND SIZE ON THE STRENGTH OF FLEXIBLE CONCRETE CAN BE EVALUATED. RESULTS ARE TABULATED FOR UNIT LOAD AND UNIT SPECIMEN THICKNESS, AND A PLOT IS MADE OF STRAIN FACTOR VERSUS BINDER MODULUS. IN SUMMARY, THE TEST RESULTS SHOWED THAT THE STRAIN FACTOR FOR PERFECTLY SPHERICAL AGGREGATES WAS ABOUT TWICE AS LARGE AS FOR SILICEOUS GRAVEL. THE STRAIN FACTOR WAS ABOUT FOUR TIMES GREATER FOR CONCRETE USING A 30 KSI BINDER MODULUS, COMPARED TO A 1 KSI BINDER MODULUS. THE SAME PROCEDURES COULD BE USED TO DETERMINE THE STRAIN FACTORS WITH SYNTHETIC AGGREGATES COMPARED TO REGULAR AGGREGATES IN EITHER RIGID (PORTLAND CEMENT) OR FLEXIBLE (ASPHALT) CONCRETE.
