RECYCLING RUBBLE FOR HIGHWAY PURPOSES
NEW CONSTRUCTION IN AND AROUND MOST CITIES CREATES FAR MORE RUBBLE THAN CAN BE ACCOMMODATED BY AVAILABLE LANDFILL FACILITIES AND DUMPS. IN RESPONSE TO THIS SITUATION TWO WASHINGTON, D. C., FIRMS ARE OPERATING PORTABLE PRIMARY CRUSHING PLANTS TO PRODUCE USABLE AGGREGATE PRODUCTS FROM DEMOLISHED ROADS, CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION, AND EXCAVATION MATERIAL AT RATES OF 100--200 TONS/HOUR. A MAJOR CUSTOMER IS THE METRO SYSTEM, WHOSE 98 MILES OF TACK WILL GENERATE OVER 10 MILLION CUBIC YARDS OF EXCAVATION MATERIAL. THE PROCEDURES AND EQUIPMENT USED IN CRACKING, CRUSHING, AND BLENDING ARE DESCRIBED; AND POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS FOR VARIOUS MATERIALS ARE DISCUSSED.
