VOLUME PRODUCTION OF FLY ASH TO AFFECT LIGHTWEIGHT CONCRETE USE
ONTARIO HYDRO, NAMELY THE ONTARIO RESEARCH FOUNDATION, HAS SPENT 7 YEARS IN DEVELOPING AND TESTING THE PRODUCTION OF LIGHTWEIGHT AGGREGATES FROM FLY ASH. STIRLING SINTERING CO. AND ENERCON ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR COMBINING A BENEFICATION PROCESS, A PELLETIZING AND SINTERING PROCESS AND A CRUSHING AND SCREENING PLANT. THE BENEFICATION PROCESS CONSIST OF SEPARATING THE POZZOLAN AND REMOVING THE EXCESS CARBON AND IRON OXIDE. FROM THERE THE MATERIAL CONTAINING MORE THAN 50% FINES AND LESS THAN 6% GOES TO THE PELLETIZER WHERE CONTROLLED AMOUNTS OF WATER TRANSFORM THE MATERIAL INTO SMALL BALLS OR PELLETS 1/2" IN DIAMETER. THE PELLETS ARE DRIED TO A TOTAL MOISTURE CONTENT OF 5% AND SENT ON A STRAND THROUGH THE SINTERING FURNACE TO REMOVE THE REMAINING MOISTURE AND TO HEAT THE MATERIAL TO INCIPIENT FUSION. AFTER LEAVING THE FURNACE THE PELLETS ARE CRUSHED, COOLED, AND READY TO USE. A WIDE RANGE OF AGGREGATE SIZES WILL BE AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST FROM THE ONTARIO'S LAKEVIEW THERMAL GENERATING PLANT NEAR TORONTO.
