Development of the sight distance criteria in the Austroads Guide to Road Design series
The release of Parts 3 and 4 of the Austroads Guide to Road Design has seen the introduction of substantially revised sight distance criteria. This was due to a review into the appropriateness of the previous criteria, including parameter values, and the need to achieve a greater level of cost effectiveness and uniformity across road authorities. This review resulted in: 1. revisions to values of particular design parameters according to the results of national and international research; 2. new criteria being developed for specific applications. This paper discusses the development of the new sight distance criteria and their application. Specific changes to the sight distance criteria include the following: 1. inclusion of 1.5 second reaction time for alert situations; 2. use of a range of values for the coefficient of deceleration; 3. update of the vertical height constants; 4. development of sight distance criteria around roadside barriers on horizontal curves; 5. revision of the application of headlight sight distance model; 6. inclusion of extended design domain criteria for sight distance; 7. inclusion of sight distance at the start of overtaking lanes; 8. revision of sight distance at freeway exit ramp diverges; 9. inclusion of sight distance at freeway entry ramp merges.
