AN IMPROVED SULFATE SOUNDNESS TEST FOR AGGREGATES

THE PRESENT SULFATE SOUNDNESS TEST METHOD FOR COARSE AGGREGATES, AASHO METHOD T 104-46 OR ASSTM METHOD C 88-46 T, PERMITS THE DETERMINATION OF SIX VALUES, ANY ONE OF WHICH MAY BE CONSIDERED AS "STANDARD." DIFFERENT LABORATORIES MAY NOT AGREE ON THE METHOD TO BE USED IN TESTING A GIVEN SAMPLE OF AGGREGATE. AN UNWARRANTED DEPENDENCE IS PLACED ON THE RESULTS OF THE TESTS. TO CORRECT THESE, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT (1) THE METHOD BE USED FOR THE ACCEPTANCE BUT NOT THE REJECTION OF AGGREGATES, (2) THE SAMPLE TESTED BE RESTRICTED TO ONE SIZE OF COARSE OR FINE AGGREGATE, (3) THE DRYING OVEN MEET PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS, (4) THE LOSS FOR COARSE AGGREGATE BE DETERMINED WITH SIEVES HAVING OPENINGS ONE-HALF THE SIZE OF THOSE IN THE ORIGINAL RETAINING SIEVES, AND (5) CERTAIN MINOR CHANGES BE MADE. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THESE CHANGES WILL RESULT IN BETTER AGREEMENT AMONG LABORATORIES CONDUCTING CHECK TESTS, AND THE TEST RESULT WILL PERMIT A RELIABLE APPRAISAL OF THE SOUNDNESS OF THE MATERIAL UNDER TEST. /AUTHOR/
