DELINEATING THE EDGE OF THE CARRIAGEWAY IN RURAL AREAS

THE AUTHOR CONSIDERS THE ROLE OF HIGHWAY DELINEATION IN SUPPLYING THE DRIVER VISUAL INFORMATION WHICH CHARACTERIZES THE ROADS, PROVIDES ROUTE GUIDANCE AND ACTS AS TRACKING REFERENCES. THE MATERIALS USED TO DELINEATE THE EDGE OF THE HIGHWAY ARE DIVIDED INTO THREE GROUPS: LINE MARKINGS (CONVENTIONAL PAINT, HOT- APPLIED THERMOPLASTIC PAINT, COLU-APPLIED PLASTICS, AND SHEET PLASTICS AND BALLOTIONS), ROAD STUDS ("CATSEYES", PLASTIC SHELL CONTAINING A CORNER-CUBE REFLECTOR FACES), AND POST DELINEATORS (CONCRETE POSTS WITH REFLECTORIZED DEVICES). A STUDY OF THE COST- EFFECTIVNESS OF EACH TYPE IS CONDUCTED, AND TABLES SHOW DELINEATION PRACTICES IN MOST EUROPEAN COUNTRIES. /TRRL/
