PLASTICS IN ROAD CONSTRUCTION
THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE FOLLOWING USES OF PLASTIC MATERIAL IN ROADS: (1) A FLEXIBLE POLYESTER REINFORCEMENT FOR FLEXIBLE PAVEMENTS, THE REINFORCEMENT IS MANUFACTURED IN ROLLS 150 M LONG AND 160 CM WIDE AND BONDS WITH THE BITUMINOUS LAYERS TO INCREASE TENSILE AND BENDING STRENGTH AND DECREASE CRACKING. RESISTANCE TO REPETITIVE LOADING IS PARTICULARLY HIGH; (2) PLASTICS MADE BY BASF IN THE FORM OF POLYSTYRENE FOAMS AND USED AS A FROST BLANKET; (3) STYROPOR CONCRETE USED AS A BASE UNDER ASPHALT LAYERS. FURTHER USES OF PLASTICS ARE MENTIONED: AS PROTECTIVE COATINGS TO REDUCE ABRASIONS, AS JOINT FILLERS, AND AS MATERIAL FOR PIPES, SAFETY FENCES, GLARE SCREENS, LIGHTING COLUMNS ETC. /TRRL/
