A GALVANIC SCREENING TEST FOR CORROSION INHIBITORS

THE MEASUREMENT BY A SIMPLE GALVANIC CELL OF THE CURRENT PRODUCED BY A CORRODING STEEL IS DESCRIBED. THE RESULTS OBTAINED DEPEND ON THE ELECTROCHEMICAL REACTIONS TAKING PLACE AT EITHER ELECTRODE. IT CAN GREATLY REDUCE THE TIME NEEDED TO SCREEN CANDIDATES BY SOPHISTICATED TESTING PROCEDURES. FARADAY'S LAW IS USED FOR THE QUANTITATIVE MEASUREMENT OF CORROSION AND CORROSION RATES. THE CONFORMATION OF THE CELL CONSISTS OF AN ANODE OF 0.25 INCH DIAMETER LOW CARBON STEEL ROD AND A PLATINUM GAUZE CATHODE. TWO INCHES OF ONE END OF THE ANODE ARE EXPOSED AND THE REST OF THE ROD IS PROTECTED BY A POLYVINYLCHLORIDE COATING. THE NOMIANL SURFACE OF SUCH AN ELECTRODE IS 10 SQ. CM. AND IT IS USUALLY SANDBLASTED AND AICD ETCHED BEFORE USE. EXPOSED TO A CORROSIVE ENVIRONMENT HAVING AN APPRECIABLE CONDUCTIVITY, A CURRENT WHICH COULD BE MEASURED BY A MICROAMMETER OR A ZERO RESISTANCE AMMETER WAS PRODUCED. WITH THE ZERO RESISTANCE AMMETER METHOD, THE CURRENT PRODUCED BY THE CELL IS OPPOSED BY A VARIABLE CURRENT WHICH IS DRAWN FROM A BATTERY UNTIL THE TWO CURRENTS ARE EQUAL. OCCASIONALLY A CHEMICAL MAY SHOW EXCELLENT RESULTS IN A GALVANIC TEST AND POOR RESULTS ON MORE SOPHISTICATED EVALUATION. A GOOD CORROSION INHIBITOR, HOWEVER, ALMOST ALWAYS GIVES GOOD RESULTS IN A GALVANIC TEST CELL. FURTHER TESTS MAY INVOLVE THE USE OF POLARIZATION RESISTANCE, RESISTANCE MEASURING PROBES AND COUPON WEIGHT LOSS MEASUREMENTS.
