PAVEMENT JOINT SEALS
UNTIL 20 YEARS AGO, JOINTS COULD BE RESEALED EVERY YEAR OR TWO DUE TO LOW LABOR COSTS AND TRAFFIC VOLUMES. TODAY CLOSING HIGHWAYS TO RESEAL JOINTS IS TOO EXPENSIVE. FAILURE TO RESEAL RESULTS IN PAVEMENT CRACKING AND SPALLING, AND "BLOWUPS." TWO NEW SEALANTS THAT LAST TEN YEARS OR MORE -- NEOPRENE SYNTHETIC RUBBER AND HOT-POURED PVC -- MAY SOLVE THE PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH FIRST COSTS ARE MUCH HIGHER THAN OTHER SEALANTS. DUE TO THE SHORT LIFE OF MANY SEALANTS, THE AIR FORCE, NAVY AND OTHERS ARE ASKING FOR WARRANTIES ON JOINT SEALING CONTRACTS. FOR BOTH SEALANTS, PROPER INSTALLATION IS CRUCIAL. DIFFERENCES ARE: PVC IS SELF-HEALING AND HAS BETTER JET-FUEL RESISTANCE THAN NEOPRENE. NEOPRENE HAS PERFORMED WELL IN LONG SLABS, WHILE PVC HAS NOT BEEN TESTED IN THIS APPLICATION. /AUTHOR/
