UTILITY-EQUIPMENT CORROSION PROBLEMS

METHODS OF EFFECTIVELY AND ECONOMICALLY REDUCING CORROSION PROBLEMS ARE DETAILED. UNDERGROUND STEEL STRUCTURES (FUEL-STORAGE TANKS, WATER LINES, FUEL- DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS AND HEATING SYSTEMS) EXPOSED TO SOILS HAVING LOW RESISTIVITIES MAY BE PROTECTED FROM DEVELOPING LEAKS BY A CONBINATION OF PROTECTIVE COATINGS AND CATHODIC PROTECTION. COAL-TAR COATINGS, TAPES, AND OTHER COATING SYSTEMS MAY BE USED. CORROSION CAUSED BY DEFECTIVE COATING MAY BE COMPLETELY CONTROLLED BY APPLICATION OF CATHODIC CURRENT USING A SACRIFICIAL ANODE IMPRESSED-CURRENT- TYPE CATHODIC PROTECTION PROTECTION SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM MUST BE PROPERLY DESIGNED, INSTALLED, MAINTAINED AND SURVEYED TO INSURE THE ADEQUACY OF THE SYSTEM. AVOIDANCE OF THE USE OF METALLIC MATERIALS WILL MINIMIZE CORROSION IN UNDERGROUND STRUCTURES. CATHODIC PROTECTION WILL REDUCE CORROSION OF GRAVY CAST-IRON PIPES. UNDERGROUND ALUMINUM-ALLOY PIPES ANDTANKS CAN BE CATHODICALLY PROTECTED, BUT CAUTION IS URGED AS OVERPROTECTION COULD LEAD TO CATHODIC CORROSION. GALVANIC ATTACK TO ALUMINUM-ALLOY HYDTANT-OUTLET PIPE IN ALUMINIUM-STEEL SYSTEMS CAN BE PREVENTED BY ISOLATION OF THE JOINT BETWEEN TWO DISSIMILAR ALLOYS. ISOLATION AND INSULATION OF STEEL AND COPPER SERVICE LINES ARE DESCRIBED. METHODS OF SOLVING THE PROBLEM OF PITTING ATTACK AND GENERAL CORROSION OF STEAM- CONDENSATE STEEL RETURN LINES OF HEATING SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED. PREVENTION OF STRESS-CORROSION CRACKING OF STAINLESS STEEL STEAM-CONDENSATE RETURN LINES IS DETAILED. PITTING ATTACK OF STEEL AND GALVANIZED STEEL PIPES AND STORAGE TANKS, COPPER TUBE AND POLYVINYLCHLORIDE PIPE BY POTABLE WATER IS DISCUSSED AND METHODS OF PREVENTION OF SUCH ATTACK ARE SUGGESTED. EROSION CORROSION OF COPPER TUBE POTABLE HOT-WATER SYSTEMS, CAVITATION CORROSION OF DIESEL-ENGINE CYLINDER LINES AND DE-ALLOYING BY POTABLE WATERS, CORROSION OF STEEL REINFORCEMENTS IN CONCRETE AND DETERIORATION CAUSED BY THE MICROBIOLOGICAL EFFECTS OF SEWAGE ARE REVIEWED AND METHODS OF CONTROL ARE DETAILED.
