MAYBE IT'S NOT GOODBYE PAINT, BUT IT'S CERTAINLY HELLO POWDER COATING

SPURRED ON BY IMMINENT CONTROLS ON AIR POLLUTION, THE METAL FINISHING INDUSTRY IS TAKING A FAST, HARD LOOK AT DRY PLASTICS POWDERS AS A POSSIBLE MEANS OF REDUCING SOLVENT EMISSIONS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE. THE MARKET FOR POWDER COATINGS IS SPLIT EVENLY BETWEEN THERMOPLASTIC POWDERS, THAT ARE APPLIED BY THE FLUIDIZED BED METHOD, AND THE MORE FINELY DIVIDED THERMOSET POWDERS THAT ARE APPLIED BY ELECTROSTATIC SPRAY. BECAUSE OF THE THICK COATINGS THAT MUST BE APPLIED, THE FLUIDIZED BED METHOD IS NOT SUITABLE FOR REPLACING PAINTS IN INDUSTRIALIZED FINISHING OPERATIONS. A CHART GIVES A COMPARISON OF PROPERTIES OF ELECTROSTATIC COATING POWDERS: ACRYLIC, EPOXY, AND POLYESTER. THE POTENTIAL FOR AUTOMOTIVE TOP COATINGS IS ESTIMATED TO BE MOSTLY ACRYLIC; ALTHOUGH POLYESTERS MAY GET A SHARE IN LESS FINISH-CONSCIOUS TRANSPORTATION MARKETS, INCLUDING TRUCKS, BUSES, AND FARM VEHICLES. /AUTHOR/
