DISTRIBUTION OF HORIZONTAL LOADD IN PILE GROUPS
MODEL STUDIES WERE MADE TO DETERMINE THE DISTRIBUTION OF HORIZONTAL LOAD IN PILE GROUPS. THREE PILE GROUPS CONTAINING 4, 9 AND 16 VERTICAL, FLEXIBLE PILES PILES AND ARRANGED IN A SQUARE PATTERN WITH VARYING PILE SPACINGS WERE TESTED IN CLEAN, COARSE- MEDIUM SAND. THE SHEAR DISTRIBUTION WAS COMPUTED BY PROCESSING THE DATA OF FLEXURAL STRAINS MEASURED ON THE PILES INSTRUMENTED WITH ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE STRAIN GAGES. THE FRONT PILES AND THE PILES ON THE PERIPHERY OF A GROUP WERE FOUND TO SHARE GREATER HORIZONTAL LOAD. RESULTS ARE REPORTED QUANTITATIVELY GIVING THE PERCENTAGE OF DISTRIBUTION OF EXTERNALLY APPLIEED HORIZONTAL LOAD AMONG THE PILES OF A GROUP. /AUTHOR/
