RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN TUNNELLING AND DEEPSHAFT SINKING IN MELBOURNE
THE POPULATION INCREASE IN METROPOLITAN MELBOURNE HAS CAUSED AN INCREASE IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS AND TUNNELS. THE BOARD OF WORKS PROGRAM INCLUDES THE CONSTRUCTION OF LARGE AMPLIFICATION SCHEMES FOR BOTH SEWAGE AND WATER SUPPLY INVOLVING MANY MILES OF TUNNELS IN BOTH ROCK AND SOFT GROUND. IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE TUNNELS, MODERN TECHNIQUES INCLUDING TUNNELLING MACHINES AND VARIOUS METHODS OF GROUND STABILIZATION HAVE BEEN USED. THESE METHODS, ALREADY USED OVERSEAS, HAVE BEEN SPECIALLY DEVELOPED FOR THE PARTICULAR CONDITIONS IN MELBOURNE AND INCLUDE THE PATENTED MODIFICATION OF A ROCK TUNNELLING MACHINE TO SUIT FRACTURED ROCK, THE USE OF SOFT GROUND MACHINES INCLUDING A FREE ARM MACHINE AND THE USE OF GROUND FREEZING. /TRRL/
