PLASTIC CONCRETE GROOVER MAKES ITS MARK ON M.40

DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF A NEW GROOVING MACHINE MANUFACTURED UNDER LICENCE FROM THE C&CA BY ERRUT PRODUCTS LTD., LONDON. THE MACHINE CONSISTS OF A MAIN FRAME, BUILT IN MODULAR SECTIONS, INCORPORATEING A RIBBED VIBRATING PLATE MOUNTED ON A TRAVERSING HEAD UNIT. THIS IS PASSED ACROSS THE SURFACE OF THE CONCRETE SLAB TO PRODUCE DEEP GROOVES WHICH ARE FORMED AS PART OF THE SLAB ITSELF, DERIVING DURABILITY FROM THE STRENGTH OF THE CONCRETE MASS. VARIOUS GROOVE SPECIFICATIONS MAY BE ATTAINED, WITH THE STANDARD FOR ROAD PAVEMENT BEING 6 MM WIDE BY 6 MM DEEP, RANDOM SPACED AT 20-50 MM PITCH. REGULAR SPACING CAN BE EMPLOYED FOR AIRFIELD CONSTRUCTION. THE BASIC MACHINE IS DESIGNED TO GROOVE A SLAB 3.75 M WIDE. THE GROOVING PLATE INCORPORATES A HYDRAULICALLY DRIVEN ROTARY VIBRATOR WITH VARIABLE FREQUENCY AND AMPLITUDE CONTROL; IT IS RAISED AND LOWERED BY DOUBLE-ACTING HYDRAULIC RAMS. THE MACHINE IS BEING USED FOR THE FIRST TIME ON THE M.40 GERRARDS CROSS BY-PASS, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE. /TRRL/
