NEW TUNNEL OF GRARDARRAMA, SPAIN
THE CONSTRUCTION IS DESCRIBED OF A ROAD TUNNEL INCLUDED IN SECTION 2 OF THE FIRST PHASE OF TE VILLALBA-VILLACASTIN MOTORWAY NEAR GUADARRAMA. THE TUNNEL WHICH WILL BE 3117 M LONG WITH A GRADIENT OF 0.89%, WILL HAVE A MAIN 7M TRAFFIC LANE, A 2.5 M SERVICE LANE, AND A CLEAR HEIGHT OF 4.50 M. DRILLING, WITH JUMBO DRILLING MACHINES, THROUGH THE GRANITE ROCK MASS WAS STARTED AT THE NORTH AND SOUTH ENTRANCES, WITH A MEETING POINT AT THE CENTRAL VENTILATION CHAMBER. THE CHAMBER, WHICH WAS CONNECTED TO THE SURFACE BY A 13.8 M CONCRETE LINED SHAFT, WAS USED FOR TRANSPORTING EXCAVATED MATERIAL, PLANT AND PERSONNEL. A NOTABLY LOW ACCIDENT RATE HAS BEEN ACHIEVED DURING THE CONSTRUCTION BY USING ACCIDENT PREVENTION TECHNIQUES AND TRAINING PERSONNEL IN SAFETY PROCEDURES. /TRRL/
