TUNNELING - SELECTION OF METHODS AND PLANT FOR ROCK TUNNELING OPERATIONS
THE ARTICLE BRIEFLY REVIEWS THE HISTORY OF TUNNELLING DEVELOPMENT AND DESCRIBES MODERN METHODS AND EQUIPMENT USED IN MAJOR TUNNELLING PROJECTS IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE WORLD. THREE FACTORS HAVE SUPPLIED THE INCENTIVE TO IMPROVE MECHANISATION: (1) INCREASING LABOUR COSTS, (2) PRESSING FOR FAST RETURN ON CAPITAL INVESTMENT, AND (3) INCREASING RATE OF INDUSTRIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEVELOPMENT. GENERAL PRINCIPLES ARE DISCUSSED FOR THE OPERATION OF CONCRETE LINING EQUIPMENT DEPENDING ON SITE CONDITIONS AND EQUIPMENT USED. DIFFERENT TYPES OF TUNNELLING MACHINES ARE BRIEFLY DESCRIBED TOGETHER WITH THE ADVANTAGES OF USING SUCH EQUIPMENT INSTEAD OF DRILLING AND BLASTING DEVICES. THE FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF VARIOUS TYPES OF TUNNELLING EQUIPMENT IS BRIEFLY MENTIONED.
