TURBULENT-MASS PROCESS SPEEDS ASPHALT OPERATION
HOT LIQUID ASPHALT, MIXED WITH WATER OR WITH WATER CONTAINING CHEMICALS TO PROMOTE COHESION AND ADHESION IN MIXTURES, IS COMBINED WITH THE AGGREGATE IN THE DRYER DRUM IN A NEW TURBULENT-MASS MIXING PROCESS. THE WATER VAPOR GENERATED BY THE HEAT OF THE TURBULENT-MASS DISPERSES THE ASPHALT QUICKLY AND ALSO ACTS AS AN OXIDATION BARRIER. HEATING AND MIXING ARE ACCOMPLISHED IN AN INERT ATMOSPHERE OF WATER VAPOR AND SPENT GASES OF COMBUSTION. AS A CONSEQUENCE, THERE IS VERY LITTLE HARDENING OF THE ASPHALT. THE PROCESS OFFERS THE FOLLOWING ADVANTAGES: (1) HIGH PRODUCTION RATES; (2) LOWER MIX TEMPERATURES; (3) GOOD CONTROL OF AGGREGATE GRADATION AND ASPHALT CONTENT; (4) HIGH QUALITY MIXTURES BECAUSE OF LESS OXIDATION OF THE ASPHALT; AND (5) LESS POLLUTION AND NO NEED FOR EXPENSIVE ANTI-POLLUTION EQUIPMENT.
