EVALUATING THE ELECTROSTATIC WELDING PROCESS FOR DYNAMIC LOADING CONDITIONS

ENGINEERS ARE HESITANT TO EMPLOY THE ELECTROSLAG PROCESS FOR WELDMENTS SUBJECT TO DYNAMIC LOADING BECAUSE NO CONCLUSIVE RESEARCH HAS BEEN CONDUCTED. THE PRINCIPAL AREAS OF CONCERN ARE THE PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF THE WELD AND HEAT- AFFECTED ZONES, AND THE MANNER IN WHICH THE WELDING PARAMETERS AFFECT THE PROPERTIES OF THESE ZONES. THE GRAIN SIZE WITHIN THE WELD METAL AND THE NATURE OF THE HEAT- AFFECTED ZONE ARE FUNCTIONS OF THE MAGNITUDE AND ORIENTATION OF THE HEAT SINKS PROVIDED BY THE PLATE MATERIAL, THE DAMS, AND THE SLAG POOL. A RESEARCH PROGRAM IS PROPOSED THAT EMBRACES A LITERATURE SURVEY, PRELIMINARY SMALL-SCALE TESTS OF NINE DIFFERENT PARAMETERS, AND TESTS OF A VARIETY OF METALS AND ELECTRODES FOR MAJOR APPLICATIONS. THE URGENCY OF THE NEED FOR THE RESEARCH IS INDICATED BY THE FACT THAT THE ELECTROSLAG PROCESS COULD ACCOMPLISH IN 20 MINUTES WORK THAT WOULD OCCUPY A FULL 8-HOUR SHIFT USING A SUBMERGED ARC BUTT WELD.
