THE TWO-PIECE TIE-BAR

THE TWO-PIECE TIE-BAR ACTUALLY IS COMPOSED OF THREE PIECES BUT IS INSTALLED IN TWO PARTS. THE FIRST PART CONSISTS OF A 12-INCH LONG, WAVY, 1/2-INCH STEEL BAR AND A 2-INCH STEEL, THREADED COUPLER. THIS PART IS PLACED IN THE FRESH SLAB BY MEANS OF A PNEUMATIC RAM. THE THREADED COUPLER HAS A FITTED PLASTIC PLUG IN THE OPEN END TO PREVENT INTRUSION OF FRESH CONCRETE AND CLOGGING OF THE THREADS. AFTER THE CONCRETE HAS SET AND PRIOR TO POURING THE ADJOINING SLAB, THE PLASTIC FITTING IS REMOVED AND THE LAST PIECE OF THE TIE-BAR, A 1/2-INCH SMOOTH, STEEL BAR WITH A 90 DEGREE HOOK, IS THREADED INTO THE COUPLER. THE CONCRETE IS THEN PLACED AROUND THIS BAR TO BOND WITH IT AND FORM A SECURE AND EFFICIENT JOINT. THE ADVANTAGES, PROBLEMS, AND APPLICATIONS OF THE TWO-PIECE TIE-BAR ARE DISCUSSED
