STAFF-MADE "PLASTIGRAPH" KEEPS TABS ON SLIPFORMED CONCRETE PAVEMENTS
TWO ENGINEERS OF THE NEBRASKA DEPARTMENT OF ROADS HAVE INVENTED A DEVICE THAT MONITORS AND RECORDS SURFACE ELEVATION PROFILES OF FRESH SLIPFORMED PAVEMENTS. THE INSTRUMENT IS BASED ON THEIR OBSERVATION, MADE WHILE OPERATING SURFACE-FINISHING TEST EQUIPMENT ON HARDENED PAVEMENTS, OF THE FUNCTIONAL SIMILARITY BETWEEN THE SUSPENSION AND FRAMEWORK OF THE TESTING EQUIPMENT AND THAT OF THE PAVERS. THE UNIT IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A MANNER THAT SURFACE TESTING OPERATIONS ARE MADE PART OF THE PAVING OPERATION. THE DESIGN, OPERATION, AND PPERFORMANCE OF THE INSTRUMENT ARE NOTED. ITS MAJOR ADVANTAGE IS RAPID DETECTION OF SURFACE IRREGULARITIES, THEREBY REDUCING THE NEED FOR POSTCONSTRUCTION GRINDING.
