FOUNDATIONS, PIERS AND ABUTMENTS, SUPERSTRUCTURES, AND DETAILS AND APPURTENANCES OF SYSTEMS BRIDGES

THE BASIC PURPOSE OF SYSTEMS BRIDGE BUILDING IS TO CREATE BETTER STRUCTURES FASTER AND WITH LESS MONEY. THE GOAL IS TO MINIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF FIELD HAND LABOR AND TO REDUCE SITE CONSTRUCTION TIME. PROBABLY THE AREA OF FOUNDATIONS SHOWS THE LEAST PROGRESS TOWARD THE GOAL AND AT THE SAME TIME OFFERS THE GREATEST DIFFICULTY IN USING A UNIFORM, PREFABRICATED APPROACH. AMONG THE SUBAREAS IN WHICH IMPROVEMENTS MIGHT BE MADE ARE SOIL UNIFORMITY, STANDARDIZATION, USE OF PILE AS PIER, MINIMIZING EXCAVATIONS, ADJUSTABILITY OF FOUNDATIONS, ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS, AND SPECIAL FOUNDATIONS. WHERE PIERS AND ABUTMENTS ARE CONCERNED, A SYSTEMS APPROACH MIGHT PROFITABLY BE ADOPTED WITH RESPECT TO ROADWAY GEOMETRY, DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF PIER ELEMENTS, DESIGN AND FABRICATION OF ABUTMENTS, AND EXECUTION OF PREPARED DESIGN CONCEPTS. THE PRINCIPAL PROBLEM IN SUPERSTRUCTURES IS TO SELECT FOR SYSTEMS BUILDING ONLY THOSE PARTS OF THE STRUCTURE THAT WILL REALLY RESULT IN A SAVING OF FIELD WORK. CANDIDATE COMPONENTS ARE IDENTIFIED. DETAILS AND APPURTENANCES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FOR SYSTEMIZATION NOT ONLY FROM THE CONSTRUCTION STANDPOINT BUT FROM THAT OF DEMOUNTING AND REUSE: SINCE MANY STRUCTURES NOW HAVE A SHORT EFFECTIVE LIFE, THOUGHT SHOULD BE GIVEN TO SALVAGE IN THE MOST ECONOMICAL WAY.
