PREFAB BRIDGE SECTIONS STUDIED FOR URBAN AREAS
PREFABRICATED BRIDGE RESEARCH WAS UNDERTAKEN WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF FINDING MEANS OF ALLEVIATING CONSTRUCTION TIE-UPS ON HEAVILY TRAVELLED URBAN STREETS AND HIGHWAYS. WHOLE SECTIONS OF BRIDGE DECKS (8 FT BY 50 FT) COMPLETE WITH DECK SURFACE AS WELL AS SUBSTRUCTURES COULD BE FACTORY PRODUCED AND HAULED TO CONSTRUCTION SITES ON FLAT BED TRUCKS OR BY RAIL. IT IS BELIEVED THAT THE TECHNOLOGY FOR SUCH A PROGRAM IS ALREADY EXISTENT AND ONLY ITS APPLICATION TO HIGHWAY BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION NEEDS TO BE DEVELOPED. INITIALLY, COSTS OF SUCH CONSTRUCTION WOULD BE HIGHER THAN THAT OF CONVENTIONAL METHODS. HOWEVER, EXPENSES WOULD BE REDUCED WHEN MANUFACTURERS BECOME EQUIPPED TO MASS-PRODUCE THE BRIDGE SECTION. IF THE PRESENT STUDY IN VIRGINIA PROVES FEASIBLE, ADDED EXPERIENCE WILL BE GAINED BY USING THE METHOD FIRST ON SECONDARY ROUTES SERVING LOW VOLUMES OF TRAFFIC.
