NEW LENGTH OF PRESTRESSED HIGHWAY PAVEMENT SLIPFORMED EASILY, QUICKLY

THE 3200 FEET OF PRESTRESSED, 24-FOOT-WIDE CONCRETE PAVEMENT SLIPFORMED ON THE ACCESS ROAD TO THE DULLES AIRPORT OUTSIDE WASHINGTON, D. C., CONSTITUTED THE FIRST FULL-SIZE HIGHWAY PRESTRESSED PAVEMENT CONSTRUCTED. THE WET BURLAP CURING MEDIUM WAS COVERED WITH POLYETHYLENE AND STRAW TO PROTECT THE CONCRETE FROM NIGHTTIME TEMPERATURES WELL BELOW FREEZING. THE FOUNDATION CONSISTS OF A 28-FOOT-WIDE 4% CEMENT-TREATED SUBBASE 6 INCHES THICK, THAT WAS CURED WITH A BITUMINOUS MEMBRANE AND COVERED WITH TWO LAYERS OF 4-MIL POLYETHYLENE TO REDUCE FRICTION UNDER THE SLABS. SOX SLABS WERE USED. PRESTRESSING DETAILS ARE GIVEN. A UNIQUE FEATURE OF THE DESIGN IS THE RELATIVELY LOW PRESTRESS IN THE SLABS; AT THE ENDS THE COMPRESSIVE STRESS IN THE CONCRETE IS ONLY 200 PSI.
