JAPANESE DEVICE BELLS CAISSON BORES AUTOMATICALLY
ONE OF JAPAN'S FIVE LARGEST CONTRACTING FIRMS HAS DEVELOPED A NEW METHOD OF EXCAVATING AND MUCKING BELLED BOTTOMS FOR LARGE CAISSON FOUNDATIONS. A SPECIAL TOOL WITH HYDRAULICALLY CONTROLLED, HINGED CUTTER ARMS REAMS A PREBORED STRAIGHT SHAFT TO THE DESIRED BELL PROFILE. THEN BENTONITE SLURRY, INTRODUCED INTO THE SHAFT BEFORE THE REAMING OPERATION, IS CIRCULATED BY AIR LIFT, MUCKING THE SHAFT IN THE PROCESS. THE OJP (OHBAYASHI JUMBO PILE) METHOD, PRODUCES CAISSONS WITH SHAFT DIAMETERS UP TO 6.6 FT HAVING LOAD CAPACITIES UP TO 2,000 TONS. THE AUTOMATED OPERATION MEANS WORKERS NEVER HAVE TO ENTER THE EXCAVATIONS.
