SAND FILL PUMPED 15 MILES FOR INTERSTATE CONSTRUCTION
INTERSTATE 10 IS BEING CONSTRUCTED THROUGH SWAMPS AND MARSHLAND ON AN EMBANKMENT IN LOUISIANA. IN ORDER TO REACH FIRMER GROUND, MUCK IS BEING REMOVED AND REPLACED WITH GRANULAR MATERIAL BROUGHT IN BY PIPELINE. TWO METHODS OF ROADWAY CONSTRUCTION WERE CONSIDERED: SOIL REPLACED BY EMBANKMENT OR STRUCTURE - SUPPORTED ROADWAYS. THE FIRST METHOD WAS SELECTED ON THE BASIS OF COST, SINCE IT WOULD HAVE COST MORE TO TRANSPORT THE GRANULAR MATERIALS BY BARGE AND BY OVERLAND. HOW THE AREA WAS CLEARED AND DREDGED, AND HOW THE GRANULAR MATERIAL WAS PLACED IS DESCRIBED.
