THE CORRELATION OF CHEMICAL AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMENS WITH THEIR ROAD PERFORMANCE, WITH DISCUSSIONS AND CLOSURE
EIGHTEEN BITUMENS USED ON TWO PREMIX SURFACING EXPERIMENTS WERE ANALYZED ACCORDING TO THE ROSTLER-STERNBERG CHEMICAL PRECIPITATION METHOD AND WERE ALSO EXAMINED IN TERMS OF THE CRITICAL PENETRATION-DUCTILITY RELATIONSHIP SUGGESTED BY THE U. S. BUREAU OF PUBLIC ROADS. THE RESULTS OF THESE TESTS HAVE BEEN COMPARED WITH THE PERFORMANCE, AFTER SIX YEARS' SERVICE, OF THE ACTUAL SURFACINGS IN WHICH THE BITUMENS WERE USED. IT HAS BEEN SHOWN THAT UNDER THE SOUTH AFRICAN COASTAL CONDITIONS, WHERE THESE EXPERIMENTS WERE MADE, THE RESULTS OF CHEMICAL ANALYSES ON THE BITUMENS EXPRESSED AS A RATIO OF THE MORE REACTIVE TO THE LESS REACTIVE COMPONENTS (COMPONENT RATIO) SHOULD MORE APPROPRIATELY BE 1.0 TO 1.7 FOR OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE AND NOT 0.8 TO 1.5, AS SUGGESTED BY HALSTEAD, ROSTLER AND WHITE. THUS, THOUGH THE TYPE OF PREMIX USED AFFECTS THE WEATHERING RATE OF THE BITUMENS, THE OVERRIDING FACTOR DETERMINING DURABILITY IS THEIR CHEMICAL COMPOSITION. THE DEGREE OF NON-NEWTONIAN BEHAVIOR OF THE BITUMENS WAS FOUND TO BE LINEARLY RELATED TO THE CHANGE IN REACTIVITY OF THE MALTENE COMPONENTS BROUGHT ABOUT BY AGING. THE RESULTS OF LABORATORY OXIDATION TESTS DID NOT AGREE WITH THE ACTUAL ROAD PERFORMANCE OR WITH THE PREDICTIONS OF THE ROSTLER-STERNBERG ANALYSES. /AUTHOR/
