THE DESIGN OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE USING MATHEMATICAL MODELS AND LINEAR PROGRAMMING TECHNIQUES
LINEAR PROGRAMMING IS APPLIED TO ASPHALTIC CONCRETE DESIGN TO ACHIEVE A PARTICULAR VOIDS CONTENT ASSOCIATED WITH THE MOST EFFECIENT COMBINATION OF CRUSHED STONE, SAND, FILLER, AND BITUMEN. THE SIMPLEX ALGORITHM IS USED TO MINIMIZE COST. A NUMERICAL METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF VOIDS WAS VALIDATED WITH RECORDS OF MARSHALL AND HUBBARD-FIELD TESTS AND BY TWO FIELD PROJECTS. THE MIXES DESIGNED BY THE PROCEDURE ILLUSTRATED IN THIS PAPER PERFORMED SATISFACTORILY ON THESE PROJECTS. ALSO, CONSISTENT ASPHALTIC CONCRETE MIXES COULD BE PRODUCED FROM VARYING INPUT PRODUCTS BY SEMI-SKILLED PERSONNEL.
