SMALL-CAR ACCIDENT INVOLVEMENT

THE ENTIRE WASHTENAW COUNTY (MICHIGAN) FILE WAS INTERROGATED IN AN EFFORT TO EXAMINE HOW SMALL AND LARGE CARS DIFFER IN THE TYPES OF CRASHES THEY BECOME INVOLVED IN. THE POSSIBLE EFFECTS OF CERTAIN DRIVER CHARACTERISTICS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS WERE ALSO INVESTIGATED. MEANS, MARGINAL DISTRIBUTIONS, AND BIVARIATE FREQUENCIES WERE DETERMINED USING A PACKAGE OF STATISTICAL PROGRAMS KNOWN AS THE STATISTICAL RESEARCH SYSTEM. SUBSET POPULATIONS OF LARGE VEHICLES AND SMALL VEHICLES WERE SELECTED FROM THE FILE ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING CATEGORIZATIONS: "LARGE" CARS INCLUDED ALL BUICKS, CHEVROLETS, FORDS, AND PLYMOUTHS; "SMALL" CARS WERE REPRESENTED BY VOLKSWAGENS, MG'S, OPELS, FIATS, RENAULTS, AND BMW'S. IT WAS APPARENT THAT THERE IS LITTLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO VEHICLE SAMPLES IN ANY OF THE CATEGORIES. /AUTHOR/
