DISPERSAL OF EMERGENCY AMBULANCES IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK: A DEMONSTRATION AND ANALYSIS
A FIELD TEST WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERIME WHETHER DISPERSAL OF INDIVIDUAL EMERGENCY AMBULANCES IN AREAS OF PREDICTABLY HEAVY DEMAND WOULD YIELD IMPROVEMENTS IN PERFORMANCE. THE KEY CRITERION IN DETERMINGING WHETHER OR NOT PERFORMANCE WAS IMPROVED WAS RESPONSE TIME REDUCTION. RESULTS YIELDED CONCLUSIVE PROOF THAT DISPERSED AMBULANCES RESPOND FASTER THAN THOSE OPERATING UNDER CONVENTIONAL PATTERNS BY AN AVERAGE OF OVER 30%. RELOCATION OF AMBULANCE AVAILABILITY TO OTHER AREAS. THE TEST DEMONSTRATED THE FEASIBILITY OF AMBULANCE DISPERSAL. EIGHT RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF A DISPERSED AMBULANCE SERVICE. /HSL/
