AUTOMOTIVE CRASH INJURY RESEARCH PROJECT INJURY EXPERIENCE IN FULL FRONT-TO-FULL-REAR-IMPACTS RELATED TO THE HUD URBMOBILE PROJECT PUBLISHED AS APPENDIX Y TO BI-MODAL URBAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM STUDY
IN ORDER TO FORM A BASIS FOR ESTIMATING THE SEVERITY OF INJURIES RESULTING FROM FRONT-TO-REAR URBMOBILE ACCIDENTS, A SAMPLE OF 546 INJURY-PRODUCING FULL FRONT- TO-FULL REAR IMPACTS INVOLVING AMERICAN CARS IS ANALYZED. THE IMPACTS ARE COMPARED BY THE DIFFERENCE IN SPEED OF FRONT AND REAR VEHICLES AT TIME OF IMPACT. THE INCREASING NATURE OF THE FREQUENCY AND SEVERITY OF INJURY WITH INCREASING SPEED DIFFERENCE IS DEMONSTRATED. INJURY TENDS TO BE MORE FREQUENT AND MORE SEVERE IN THE REAR CAR THAN IN THE FRONT CAR. INJURY TENDS TO BE LESS FREQUENT AND LESS SEVERE WHEN THE FRONT VEHICLE IS STOPPED AT THE TIME OF IMPACT. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT INJURY TO URBMOBILE OCCUPANTS WILL NOT BE SUBSTANTIAL IN IMPACTS WITH SMALL SPEED DIFFERENCES. /HLS/
