PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN AUTOMOBILE REAR LIGHTING
THE REAR LIGHTING AND SIGNALING SYSTEM IS AMENABLE TO DEVELOPMENT TO PROVIDE BETTER DRIVER PERFORMANCE AND THUS REDUCE ACCIDENTS. A STATIC DRIVING SIMULATION AND ACTUAL DRIVING TESTS SHOWED THAT NUMBER CODING, FUNCTIONAL SEPARATION, AND COLOR WERE EFFECTIVE IN REDUCING RESPONSE TIME, MISSED SIGNAL, AND ERRORS OF FOLLOWING DRIVERS. STUDIES OF COLOR DISCRIMINATION AND VISIBILITY IN CLEAR AND FOGGY ATMOSPHERES SHOWED THAT GREEN-BLUE WOULD BE A PRACTICAL PRESENCE LIGHT COLOR. DUAL INTENSITY SIGNALS AND PRESENCE LIGHTS ARE RECOMMENDED, TOGETHER WITH FORWARD-MOUNTED REPEATER TURN SIGNALS. SEPARATE PRESENCE, TURN, AND STOP SIGNAL LAMPS SHOULD BE COLOR CODED GREEN-BLUE, AMBER AND RED. /HSL/
