FIXED BASE SIMULATOR VERSUS SKID PAN PRACTICE IN SKID CONTROL TRAINING. FINAL REPORT
COMPARISONS WERE MADE OF THE RESPONSE TO THE FIRST SKID ON A SKID PAN AND THE NUMBER OF PRACTICE TRIALS REQUIRED TO REACH AN ARBITRARY CRITERION AS A FUNCTION OF PRIOR PRACTICE ON THE SKID PAN OR ON A FIXED-BASE DRIVING SIMULATOR. A TEST WAS MADE IMMEDIATELY AFTER TRAINING AND THREE MONTHS AFTER INITIAL PRACTICE. THE RESULTS SHOW SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IMMEDIATELY AND AFTER THREE MONTHS FOR SKID PAN PRACTICE GROUP. ALTHOUGH ONLY A FEW OF THE MEASURES OF TRANSFER OF TRAINING WERE STATISTICALLY SIGNIFICANT FOR THE SIMULATOR PRACTICE GROUP, ALL WERE IN THE DIRECTION OF POSITIVE TRANSFER, AND ONE OF THE IMMEDIATE TEST MEASURES DID REACH THE FIVE PERCENT LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE. ALTHOUGH SOME OF THE OBSERVED RESULTS MAY BE DUE TO CHANCE ALONE, ALL ARE CONSISTENT WITH THE HYPOTHESIS THAT SKID CONTROL TECHNIQUES CAN BE TAUGHT TO A LARGE PORTION OF THE DRIVING PUBLIC AND THAT AN AS YET UNDETERMINED AMOUNT OF PRACTICE ON A FIXED-BASE DRIVING SIMULATOR CAN BE EFFICIENTLY SUBSTITUTED FOR SOME SKID PAN PRACTICE. /SRIS/
