INTERIM REPORT - EVALUATION OF HIGH MOUNT AREA LIGHTING AT THE I-94 AND I-80 EXPRESSWAY INTERCHANGE
A FEASIBILITY STUDY WAS CONDUCTED INTO THE APPLICABILITY OF HIGH MOUNT AREA ILLUMINATIONS SYSTEMS AS A SAFER MEANS OF PROVIDING HIGHWAY ILLUMINATION AT INTERCHANGES. THE HIGH MOUNT AREA LIGHTING CONCEPT CONSISTS OF MOUNTING LIGHT SOURCES AT HIGH POLES PLACED AS REMOTELY FROM THE ROADWAY AS POSSIBLE. IN ADDITION TO THE SAFETY ADVANTAGES, FAVORABLE CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN FROM THIS STUDY WITH RESPECT TO UNIFORMITY OF ILLUMINATION, MAINTENANCE AND MAINTENANCE SAFETY, AESTHETICS, GLARE REDUCTION, AND VISIBILITY UNDER ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS. WITH RESPECT TO COSTS, CONVENTIONAL AND HIGH MOUNT AREA MOUNTING SYSTEMS ARE COMPETITIVE. DELINEATION AND OPTICAL GUIDANCE PROVIDED BY PAVEMENT STRIPING AND REFLECTOR DELINEATORS ARE ENHANCED UNDER TOWER LIGHTING ILLUMINATION. A LARGE REDUCTION IN ACCIDENTS SHOULD BE ANTICIPATED PROVIDING ALL EXISTING 34 FOOT NON-FRANGIBLE POLES BE REMOVED FROM THE AREA AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THE UNIFORMITY OF ILLUMINATION WAS SUBSTANTIALLY IMPROVED AND COULD BE FURTHER AMELIORATED BY USING HIGHER POLES AT SOME LOCATIONS, WHERE THE HIGH MOUNT POLE IS NOT ADEQUATELY REMOTE FROM THE PAVEMENT.
