DRIVER EDUCATION: PROBLEMS AND PSYCHOLOGICAL GUIDELINES

A SURVEY IS PRESENTED OF THE PROBLEMS RELATED TO AUTOMOBILE DRIVING, STRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF A COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF THE INDIVIDUAL AS A BIOLOGICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, AND SOCIAL UNIT. CONTRIBUTIONS FROM ERGONOMICS, HUMAN ENGINEERING, AND PSYCHOLOGY RANGE FROM RESEARCH ON TRAFFIC LIGHTS, DRIVER FATIGUE, TO DRIVER SUITABILITY, WITH THE EDUCATIONAL MEASURES DEVELOPED DIRECTLY FROM PSYCHOLOGICAL STUDIES (E.G., THE PERSONALITY OF THE DRIVER) CONSIDERED TO BE THE PRINCIPAL LONG-TERM FACTORS IN TRAFFIC SAFETY, DESPITE THE RESTRICTIVE NATURE OF PSYCHOTECHNICAL SELECTION. /A/
